Sterling Silver Balinese Lapis Ring

Sassoferrato’s Virgin in Prayer is an amazing work. The blues are almost like nothing I’ve ever seen. But, then again, I have seen that blue -- it’s sitting right before you. The blue color in the painting is a color called ultramarine. It’s derived from a material called lapis lazuli (lapis).

Lapis was prized during the renaissance for its deep blue color, that’s unlike anything else found in nature. The price by weight at one point exceeded the price of precious metals like gold and silver. Those times are gone, but the 6000-year appreciation for the stone continues.
